The Game Of Keno: A Brief History

March 11, 2011

It is easy to get your hands on  lots of information about how to play the game of keno, but let’s have a look at some of the facts about the game, which is not that commonly known but still interesting. The house edge in a keno game typically  from around 4% to 35%, whereas the house edge in other    games, except the slot machines, ranges between 0% and 5%.

There are many other games that offer better odds than keno does, but it is the embodiment of what  gambling is all about . By placing a small bet you  hope to get a huge win from this small bet. Some believe  that the word keno has either French or Latin roots, but that it originated in China.

There is even a legend that the invention of the game saved an ancient  city in time of war hundreds of years ago and funds raised from the game helped fund the building of the Great Wall of China. However in modern China lotteries were not that welcome  as a means of generating revenue and was not accepted until the late 19th century.

The first    Chinese lottery was called baige piao. This game was licensed by the Portuguese government of Macao in 1847. It is also rumored that the results of these  keno games in cities were sent to outlying villages by carrier pigeon. This is where the name baige piao came from which, when translated, roughly  means “white pigeon tickets” in Cantonese.

The original version of the game was played using the first 80 characters of the Thousand Character Classic. From this the winning characters were then selected . It works fairly similar these days   when you play casino keno.

As time passed the game    was introduced to the West as immigrants crossed the Pacific    to help with the building of the First Transcontinental Railroad in the 19th century. Since then it has become a very popular casino game throughout the United States and many people play keno game at casinos. Many people also    like to play online keno as they are able to control the pace of the game  and play as fast as they want to.
